Astra Coating Info

How does Bits & Bits’ Astra Coating extend the life of your bits?

During any type of cutting process, the cutting bit endures heat created by the friction and abrasion of the bit moving through the material. This friction and abrasion is a major cause of bit wear, resulting in the cutting edge dulling or deteriorating, causing burning, a rough finish and vibration.

Astra Coating is an applied multi-layered surface coating that lowers the friction coefficient of the bit, which allows the bit to cut smoother and faster while keeping friction heat down. This in turn will extend the life of the bit. Astra Coating is effective in wood, metals, aluminum, brass, and plastics, allowing faster speed and feed rates. Astra Coating can also reduce dust and pitch build up, but when it does occur, the bit can be easily cleaned using bit cleaning solution or solvents as it is chemical resistant.

Most of the solid carbide CNC bits, end mills and router bits that we manufacture are Astra Coated, including up-cut, down-cut, compression bits, v-groove and v-bits. We also are the only factory authorized Whiteside distributor to offer Astra Coated Whiteside Router bits, including spiral flush trim bits, straight bits, round overs and more.

Inevitably, a tool will eventually wear to a point where it can no longer be used without being sharpened. Astra Coated tools can be sharpened just as you would a standard carbide tool and can continue to offer a sharp cutting edge.
